After lunch, after I walked Pete four times around the wide property, I stood in the woods with Javier, a heavy semiautomatic rifle in my hands. The heavy piece of metal scared me. I recalled the rifle shooting at us from the passenger side, the bullets coming faster than thought, flames erupting steadily from the barrel. Had any of us, even Miri, been shot by that gun, so similar to this one, we’d not have survived.

“Okay, same principles as the Sig Sauer,” Javier explained, taking the gun from me. “Safety, magazine, point and shoot.”

He demonstrated for me, squeezing off a short burst at a nearby tree with a paper target. All his shots hit the bullseye. The business end smoked a little as he handed the gun back. “It’s got a mule’s kick,” he warned, pacing to stand behind me. “Brace yourself.”

I obeyed, planting my left leg behind my right, sighting down the barrel as he guided me into the proper position. I fired. And the gun slammed me backward into Javier’s arms.

Laughing, he helped me upright. “Okay, when I say brace yourself, I mean it. Look, let’s shift from automatic to semi, which means only one bullet per trigger pull. Start small.”

He clicked a button on the gun, then encouraged me to aim at the target again. This time, I’d prepared myself for the kick, and a single round exploded from the barrel. To my own amazement, I hit the target.

“Right on!” Javier exclaimed, hugging me. “Keep trying.”

The gun was heavy, dragging at my arms. Still, I grew used to it, its kick, and within an hour or so I hit the paper target consistently. With both auto and semiauto settings, I grew confident I could hold my own in the case of an attack. That thought brought immediate horror on its heels.

Am I ready to shoot someone? Really and truly shoot to kill? This gun could mow down dozens in a single sweep. What kind of world am I living in?

Javier obviously saw something on my face as I lowered the rifle to my side. “Baby?”

“This gun.” I swallowed and started again. “It’s for military combat, not single mothers. I can shoot a piece of paper. Can I shoot a human being?”

Taking the weapon from me, Javier pulled me into his arms. “You’ll do what’s right, Zoe,” he murmured. “Trust in that. You’ve got a good head right here, lots of motivation to protect Miri. And the three of us.”

I gazed up into his kind, warm, brown eyes, his tender smile. “Are you putting too much faith in me?”

“I don’t believe so. Some people freak at the thought of shooting a gun like this. Others like it too damn much. You offer it the respect it deserves, the proper caution, the knowledge of what it can do. See what I mean?”

“I think so.”

His arm over my shoulders, we ambled from the woods and onto the sprawling green lawn. Nick and Miri played tag near the house, Miri screaming with laughter as Nick “ran” behind her as she fled, her hair streaming behind her.
